The house had a fantastic Christmas day. They had a Khmer Christmas lunch which included a birthday cake for Jesus. There was much laughter with games played all day.

The girls have been on holiday for a week and last Monday we ventured out of Phnom Penh to one of the water parks. It was great the girls virtually had the place to themselves! There were pools, small and large slides, rope swings and lots of peace and quiet. The staff and girls enjoyed a picnic there – fried chicken, rice and fruit and at 3pm returned very worn out. What a great day!

The girls had the most fantastic time at a Mask party at church last week organised by the Youth Group. There were games, food, music and dancing.

The middle and older girls all had new shoes and dresses for the event and looked so beautiful with their hair and makeup done by the two girls who are training in beauty! The night went late – until 9pm and there were a few very tired girls the next day.

On the weekend our House Supervisor takes 2 of the girls out to one of the shopping centres to have a drink and a snack at the coffee shop. The girls love getting dressed up for their outing and enjoy doing something different.

The girls also help with the shopping in the supermarket and are given the opportunity to pay for the groceries, this all helping them in building their confidence and self esteem.

Older and some middle girls are enjoying serving God in church. They help out with Children’s Church and sometimes greet on the door. It is amazing to watch their passion for serving grow and their commitment to building the Kingdom of Heaven. We can’t do everything but we can do something – I love that they are doers!

One of our families brought their extended family to church on Sunday – Brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews – there was 13 people in the tuktuk from the one house. What a joy to see this family respond to grace with such a zeal to share the good news of the Gospel.

All the girls and staff appear settled and happy, 5 of the girls went with their families to visit their homelands for the holidays last week. They all had a great time and had lots to talk about.

We took 13 of the girls to Swensen’s for an ice cream. They loved being out and of course the ice creams went down well. It is always a bit of a shock to the staff at Swensen’s when we arrive with so many girls.

Last Thursday afternoon, all the girls came to aerobics... even the young ones! They all looked so cute in their new white sandshoes and colored socks.

Two of the older girls are starting at Open Arms Beauty School on Monday. This is a 6 month course and the girls are studying Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. This is a big day for the girls but the best thing is they have an entire house of girls to practice on. Should be lots of fun for all.

The little girls went to the park the other day with the House mothers and had a great time riding their bikes and playing. Something which we take for granted in Australia but a real special treat in Cambodia.

The big and middle girls went to aerobics at the local school with Julie and one of the house sitters. They enjoyed it and want to do it every week.

Some of the girls are involved in a dance performance at church in September which is very exciting and a new experience.

Mad Way South Dinner

posted - 13th August 2009

Geoff Wilson and the amazing Mad Way South team are not only helping to raise funds and awareness for our SHE Rescue Home by trekking across the Sahara desert on kite buggies they are also pretty good at throwing together a dinner party.

On Friday the 17th of July, some of our Citipointe team had the opportunity to gather with Geoff Wilson and his crew in celebration of their upcoming journey and in acknowledgment of all the good work started by our own Pastor Leigh Ramsey. This incredible team are hoping to- or should we say planning to- break up to 4 world records and will be away for over three weeks. What a crazy spirit of adventure, eh!

New friendships were forged and many laughs were shared as we united for the ONE cause.

Through the generosity of donations, pledges and sales of our Cambodian merchandise those attending the dinner raised over 20 thousand dollars. What an incredible God we serve!

Many thanks to Geoff and Sarah Wilson, who hosted the night and to all that gave generously and to those who have pleged support. You have all had an eternal impact on the lives and futures of our girls. We appreciate you!

General Information

  • Continuing to work expand the micro-enterprise business. New families are being trained and will begin working soon. It is so exciting to see these families given an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. We look forward to the day when we can see their children safely living in their homes and no longer at risk of being trafficked.
  • Our national Khmer staff are continuing with comprehensive English lessons. This helps to make our work in Cambodia efficient and also increases the skills of our local staff.

Updates on the Girls

  • The 18th of June was birthday celebration day in the home and it was also a national public holiday, so there was much celebrating that took place. It is such a blessing to see the free spirits of these girls as they embrace the life that God has given them.

Prayer Requests

  • Please pray that our chicken pox epidemic will be over. Many of the girls have contracted this illness over the past month.
  • Please pray that our staff will have grace and strength in caring for the girls – we all know what it is like to have sickness in the home, it can be so draining.
  • Please pray for the families in the micro-enterprise business; that they will find purpose for their whole lives and not just in business; that they will see the love and grace of God through the project and the staff.
  • Pray for the girls continued rehabilitation and renewal in mind, body and spirit.

Sailing the Sahara for She

posted - 2nd July 2009

Geoff Wilson and the amazing ‘Mad Way South’ team are undertaking a trans-Tasman challenge like no other. Racing each other on kite buggies across 2,500 km of the world’s toughest terrain, these men aim to claim the rights to be the first to have ever crossed this desert by wind power alone. The purpose for the Mad Way South Sahara Challenge is to raise awareness of the plight of women and children who have been forced into commercial sexual exploitation in Cambodia.

All funds raised will assist our SHE Rescue Home – Cambodia where we provide refuge for girls who are at a high risk of being or have been trafficked. This incredible journey starts on the 3rd of August in Northern Morocco and will continue through Western Sahara, Mauritania, ending in Dakar, Senegal. All monies raised go directly to the girls in need via support of the She Rescue Home - Cambodia.

You can pledge your support at madwaysouth.com.

Waves and Wheels

posted - 29th Jan 2009

Khmer culture is very much built around a water lifestyle. The Cambodian people place a lot of importance on the river and in fact one of there 3 major festivals is the Water Festival. However most of the girls in our home had never seen the beach, so to celebrate New Years Eve all the staff and the girls of the home headed down to the very picturesque Ochheuteal beach to enjoy the waves.

Getting there….The Khmer Way:
We have a fourteen seater bus. So the first question that springs to mind is “how many people can you fit into a fourteen seater bus?” Well, there was 16 girls, 3 house mothers, 1 manager, 1 counselor, 1 teacher, 1 tuktuk driver, 4 volunteers , 1 guy driving the van and me! Yep, that’s 29 people! How did we do it? Well there was a lot of sitting on laps (including Andrew and Trish King sharing the front seat) and I was sitting on the floor between the two front seats facing back wards. Wow what an experience….

Of course the uncomfortable 4 ½ hour bus ride each way was completely forgotten the moment we came over the hill and saw the water. Squeals of delight came from each corner of the van as the girls saw more water in one place than they had ever seen in all their lives.

All in all we had a lovely day. We enjoyed the waves and the sand and some great quality time sharing laughs and having fun together.

Hope you had as much fun for your New Years. Happy New Year from the staff and girls at SHE Cambodia!

Happy Khmerry Christmas…

posted - 29th Jan 2009

So how does Christmas look in Cambodia? Well to start with it is not a public holiday, which is extra surreal considering Cambodia is the home of Public Holidays with a grand total of 29 public holidays per year!

With everybody still busy going to work and school, including the girls living in our house, I was very aware how far I was from home… On the upside the fact that Christmas Day was a fairly normal day meant that Christmas week was a fabulous extravaganza as we celebrated the birth of our Saviour again and again.

On the Sunday before Christmas, the 21st of November there was a great big party at Church. 9 of our girls danced at the Childrens Church Christmas party, which was a proud moment for all of the She project staff. And there was a fabulous nativity play, lots of Christmas Carols and a party with games and a talent show. So much fun!

On Christmas Eve we had the She project Christmas Lunch. What a beautiful spread (lovingly prepared by Trish King who was in town volunteering with her family) lots of games and dancing and everyone was blessed with lovely presents (thank you for your generous donations).

Boxing Day evening was the New Life International Christian School, where 11 of the girls are in attendance, Annual Christmas Concert. It was so lovely to see the girls reciting scriptures, singing and dancing to celebrate Jesus Birthday!

I’d love to share with you my favorite moment of Christmas. I was watching one of our House Mothers, Samet beaming with pride as the girls performed as part of their school concert. What a beautiful testimony to Gods grace and power in seeing these young lives restored and this beautiful Khmer lady finding fulfillment and restoration as she reveled in her role as Mother. How great is our God that He is able to bring so much beauty from ashes, so much joy from mourning. God be praised. We hope you had a lovely Christmas. Suesday Tgnay Bon Noel…. Happy Khmerry Christmas to you all!

Khmer New Year Celebrations

Helen Shield - posted - 16th Oct 2008

In April the whole nation stops to celebrate Khmer New Year. Officially, there are three days off, but it’s not uncommon to see businesses closed for weeks as people all over the nation exit the city to celebrate with their extended family in the countryside.

This is a party that every Cambodian is part of, and whether old or young, everyone cares about getting to their province to be part of it. But what about children whose family celebration isn’t a safe place for them? If it’s even a dangerous link to a life that, is not ok.

What does their Khmer New Year look like? Staying safe was not going to mean missing out if we had anything to do with it . May I present to you the very first SHE Rescue Home Khmer New Year Party!

Maybe you’ve never done dances where you make your hands look like lotus blossoms; maybe you’ve never played a game where you throw seeds that look like kneecaps at your opponent’s seeds, and then bop them on the knee with a couple seeds if you win; maybe you’ve never eaten sticky rice treats out of palm leaves to celebrate an event, but, the SHE Rescue Home girls have.

It was days of continuous fun! We danced the dances, played the games, ate the food. Our house became party headquarters, then we hit the church party, and when our counsellors’ church threw one too, we went and partied there as well. We took on the Phnom Penh Water Park, and a Cambodian burger chain Lucky Burger, for the teams who have happy memories there. I’m sure you can imagine the squeals, the giggles, the joy.

Then think about what could have been – one of those same girls had, not long before, been asked by her mum to go to work in a brothel to provide income for the family. That’s where she would have spent the holiday. She’s 10.

So, thanks for being part of creating a very different Khmer New Year for these girls; one where God had brought hope and freedom and opportunity. That’s really something worth celebrating!
